Renew your driver’s licence in Ghana (2026)
Steps, documents, 2026 fees and DVLA offices across Ghana.
Valid for 2 years, expiring on your birthday
Licences are renewed every 2 years with an eye test. DVLA said in January 2026 that licences will expire on the holder’s birthday and that it will send SMS reminders.
Renew up to 1 month before expiry
Driving on an expired licence is an offence (reported as 5–25 penalty units, up to 30 days in jail). Late renewal is counted from the old expiry date.
Clear TRAFFITECH-GH fines first
DVLA withholds licence renewal, registration, transfer and roadworthy tests while fines are unpaid. Dial *220# to check before you go.
Step by step
- Get an eye test. From a DVLA-accredited clinic. Eye tests are no longer done at DVLA offices.
- Apply online. Create an account on online.dvla.gov.gh, choose Licence renewal and verify with your Ghana Card.
- Pay the fee. Pay at a bank or through ghana.gov.gh and keep the invoice or approval.
- Visit a DVLA office. Take your old licence, Ghana Card and eye-test report for biometric capture.
- Collect your licence. You get a temporary cover note; the smart card is usually ready in 2–4 weeks. Premium and Prestige centres are faster.
What to take

Not mandatory yet. A June 2026 report saying it was mandatory was retracted; DVLA plans accredited testing centres with no start date.
Insurance sticker check
Third-party insurance is compulsory. Scan the QR code on the electronic sticker, or dial *920*57# (reported in 2020–21; not re-checked in 2026).
