Spot a fake traffic fine SMS

Scam messages copied the new camera fines within a day of launch. Here is how to tell.

Check the sender

Real fine notices come from GPS-MTTD. A message from an ordinary phone number is a red flag.

No links in real notices

Official notices do not contain payment links. Do not tap links in fine messages.

Never pay a personal MoMo number

Pay only through the NIB portal or the official short codes. Scammers ask for payment to personal mobile money numbers.

There are no discounts

DVLA says it never discounts fines. "Pay GH¢60 within 48 hours instead of GH¢120" is a scam.

Never share a PIN or OTP

No real traffic service asks for your card number, MoMo PIN or one-time code.

Check, then report

Dial *220# or open the NIB portal to check. Report fake messages to the Police on 191 or 18555.

The Traffic GH app includes a message checker: paste the SMS and it lists the warning signs. The check runs on your phone and the message is never uploaded.
